Higher intake of folate may decrease the risk of Alzheimer disease

Share |

There isn’t a person who does not know the benefits of vitamins.A number of
signs and symptoms are associated with their deficiency.Perhaps no one knew it could have effect on Alzheimers disease as well. But researchers mind thought
it could have a role in ADs.With this in mind they designed their experiment to
check if intake of folate, vitamin B6,and vitamin B12 had any relationship to AD
risk. They followed 965 persons 65 years or older without dementia for 6.1 +/-
3.3 person-years after the administration of a semiquantitative food frequency
queationnaire. They related energy-adjusted intake of folate and vitamins B6 and B12 to incident of AD using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. After adjustment for age, sex, education, ethnic group, the epsilon4 allele of apolipoprotein E,diabetes mellitus, hypertension, current smoking, heart disease, stroke, and vitamin B and B12 levels, they found they found the relationship between total folate intake and ADs.When they tried to relate Vitamin B6 and B12 levels they didn’t get any significant finding. They concluded that higher folate intake may decrease the risk of AD independent of other risk factors and levels of vitamins B6 and B12.
