A lot has been said about the cosmetic effect of clay.Perhaps many didnt know that it has also been claimed to have certain healing properties.Today while surfing the net I discovered some really interesting stuff about clay.
1."Clay is most commonly associated with the sublime experience of the European spa where visitors have been masked, soaked and basted with this touted curative since the Romans ruled. If ASU geochemist Lynda Williams and microbiologist Shelley Haydel's research on the antibacterial properties of clays realizes its full potential, smectite clay could one day rise above cosmetic use to take its place comfortably with antibacterial behemoths like penicillin.
National Institutes of Health (NIH) program directors agreed. They awarded a $438,970 grant over two years to Williams and Haydel for the study of clay mineral alternative treatment for Buruli ulcer. What makes this award even more interesting is the rarity for a geochemist to net a NIH grant."
2."Rapan products have been researched by the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and proven to contain up to 5 times more antioxidants, carotenoids, retinoids, hormones, vitamins and minerals than Dead Sea products, which makes their effect up to 20 times more powerful.
While all the products come from the same salt lake and have similar properties, they have certain differences. Rapan Mud has the strongest effect on the body and skin, stimulating them into healing in the most powerful way. It has to be used with care by people with certain health conditions (e.g. heart problems) and is contraindicated in serious cases, such as aggravated heart condition, epilepsy, cancer, undiagnosed tumours, etc."
3."The highly micronized, and often fragile molecular state of French Green Clay allows for far greater absorption of impurities, dust, oil, contaminants, and make up then other clays, and when seeking treatment for the skin...."
4."The eating of clay has been observed in [ native ] peoples and animals in all parts of the world since antiquity. Early writers described the widespread use of kanwa ( earth from a lick near Lake Chad ) for animals and humans in Nigeria. Long journeys were made to [ this ] lick to obtain a tribal supply of this earth, and it was then issued as rations to cattle and humans..." Eaton Earth
5.Montmorillonite has been used in cosmetics and has reputed therapeutic effects. Indeed over 200 cultures have used the clay for medicinal purposes including the Ancient Egyptians, the Essenes and the pre-Aztec Amargosians, and other natives of Mexico, South America and North America.-wikipedia
6.Studies show that the use of volcanic ash clay internally goes back to the Indians of the high Andes mountains, tribes in Central Africa and the aborigines of Australia. Taken internally, it supports the intestinal system in the elimination of toxins. The application of clay has achieved miraculous healing of Buruli Ulcer - mycobacterium ulcerans which is similar to leprosy and tuberculosis mycobacterium or flesh eating disease.....
7."The duo tested both of the French clays that Brunet de Courssou had been using. One completely inhibited pathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Mycobacterium marinum. It was also found to partially inhibit the growth of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus, including a multi-drug resistant variety. But results from the other clay weren't so exciting. "The other clay actually helps the bacteria to grow," Haydel lamented. The researchers don't know why one clay kills bacteria and the other promotes growth."......
8.December, 1964: Dr. Benjamin H. Ershoff, begins NASA-sponsored research prompted by evidence that astronauts' bodies lose large amounts of calcium from the bones under conditions of weightlessness. According to doctors, such conditions weaken the body and increase chances that kidney stones may develop during flights lasting months or years. Ershoff found that supplementing the diet with calcium alone couldn't reverse the severe damage of severely accelerated osteoporosis--but clay did, for animals. Especially the red desert clay Terramin, (then called "ion-min) produced impressive results in promoting growth and preventing disorders in the bones of tested animals, Ershoff said......
9.Dr. Cohen - "In addition to the role it plays as a potent detoxifier, Calcium Montmorillonite Clay has also been used extensively in the treatment of pain, open wounds, colitis, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, stomach ulcers, intestinal problems, acne, anemia, and a variety of other health issues. Clay not only cures minor problems, such as diarrhea and constipation through local application; it acts on all the organs—on the whole organism. Everything unhealthy, that emits negative radiations is irresistibly attracted to clay and becomes subject to immediate elimination." .....
10.Eewahkee is the traditional indian name for an unusual bentonite clay found only in the Big Horn Mountain region of northern Wyoming. In its natural state, the clay is sandy white in color and has a crumbly, cheese like texture. For centuries, indian medicine men had used this clay.
