You thought that carbon monoxide is an evil gas that kills silently. This odorless and colorless “silent killer” is not always satanic.
It has been studied on rats that it could benefit in multiple sclerosis. And recently it’s possible use in transplantation of organs has been reported.Through the injection of certain protein concoction,a disease similar to multiple sclerosis was produced in mice. They were then divided into two groups. One of the groups was put in a carbon monoxide for a certain period in a specific concentration of carbon monoxide. This treated group showed better mobility than the control untreated one.
Some say that it helps against the generation of harmful free radicals. It is said to help in organ transplantation by helping against reperfusion injury to the transplanted organ. It calms down the scourge of immunological attack as well. Here again it may be by its role of countering free radicals.
Its use in the packaging of meat products is quite well known. Basically, it combines with hemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin. This gives the meat a fresh red look.It has been approved by FDA.Some criticize it as it seems to mask spoilage. But FDA stand by their approval contending that it does not mask the bad odor of spoilage.
In conclusion, I would say that carbon monoxide remains one of the most common fatal poisonings in several countries. Last year, in December, use of generators and charcoal grill triggered by power outages in western Washington, had been reported to have caused several people to undergo hyperbaric oxygen treatment in hospitals. Several more similar cases of carbon monoxide poisoning has emerged in the past. The video above will give you some insight into this “SILENT KILLER”.
