Health Benefits of Fish

Article by Dr.Khushnood

It has been several months since I ate fish. Nevertheless, it's wonderful and is considered a great brain food. Especially sought after are ones with high levels of omega-3-fatty acids.

Studies conducted by Swedish researchers on nearly 5000 15-year-old boys found that those who ate fish more than once per week scored higher on intelligence tests three years later. Several other studies have come to a similar conclusions.

What makes fish a brain food?
Not all fish may be good. Fishes that are high on omega-3-fatty acids are good for brain. Sardines, Atlantic mackerel, Herring, and Lake trout are some fishes with high omega-3-fatty acids. Of these, Sardines have the highest amount of omega-3-fatty acids. Omega acids are important to early brain development and in the maintenance of healthy brain function.

Other Benefits?
Fish are good for prostate too. A study was conducted on 900 men who showed signs of prostate problems. It was found that those who ate red meat or meat products every day, 5 times a week, were 3 times more likely than average to have prostate cancer. On the other hand, those who ate fish 4 times a week were half as likely as the average, to have prostate cancer. Fish has also been found to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

Potential risks?
One risk in consuming large amounts of fish is that of heavy metal poisoning. As a result thereof, the FDA recommends that total dietary intake of omega−3 fatty acids from fish not exceed 3 grams per day, of which no more than 2 grams per day are to be from nutritional supplements.

That’s all for today's health update.
Good day.

I do agree with this post. Seems that we have the same idea when it comes to fish oil. Actually, I also would like to recommend krill oil because it provides a lot of healthy contents aside from the healthy benefits that fish oil can give.

Indeed fish is an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Besides the benefits you already mentioned, it offers protective effects for cardiac health.

A study stated that quote "after 3.5 years, those taking the omega-3 fatty acids had experienced a 20% reduction in overall mortality and a 45% decrease in risk for sudden cardiac death." This study was presented in journal, Nutrition in Clinical Practice, Vol. 16, No. 1, 6-12 (2001).
