justify;">The health effects of tea have been examined ever since the first infusion of Camellia sunensis about 4700 years ago in China .The legendary emperor Shennong claimed in The Divine Farmer,s Herb-Root Classic that Camellia sinensis infusions were useful for treating conditions including tumors ,abscesses, bladder ailments and lethargy.

Some studies have been made of the other types of tea derived from Camellia sinensis, such as white, oolong and black tea. Green tea has been claimed to be helpful for atherosclerosis, LDL cholesterol , cancer , inflammatory bowel disease , diabetes ,liver disease ,weight loss ,neurodegenerative diseases and even halitosis.

What makes green tea so special?

The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

Other Benefits:

Increases metabolic rate:

Clinical trials conducted by the University of Geneva and the University of Birmingham indicate that green tea raises metabolic rates, speeds up fat oxidation and improves insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance.

Lowers chances of cognitive impairment:

A 2006 study showed that elderly Japanese people who consumed more than 2 cups of green tea a day had a 50 percent lower chance of having cognitive impairment, in comparison to those who drank fewer than 2 cups a day, or who consumed other tested beverages .This is probably due to the effect of EGCG, which passes through the blood-brain barrier.

Effects on HIV:

A recent study appearing in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology was the subject of an article on BBC News. It stated that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) found in green tea can lead to the inhibition of HIV binding and may be used as a complementary therapy for HIV patients, but qualified it by noting that "It is not a cure, and nor is it a safe way to avoid infection, however, we suggest that it should be used in combination with conventional medicines to improve quality of life for those infected.

Effects on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD):
The polyphenols in green tea have been shown to reduce intestinal inflammation in mouse models of IBD.

For Burning of calories:

New evidence is emerging that green tea can even help dieters. In November, 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

Prevent tooth decay:

Green tea can even help prevent tooth decay! Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that cause dental plaque.

Harmful Effects :

To date, the only negative side effect reported from drinking green tea is insomnia due to the fact that it contains caffeine. However, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee: there are approximately thirty to sixty mg. of caffeine in six - eight ounces of tea, compared to over one-hundred mg. in eight ounces of coffee.

The copyright of the health article, "Is Green Tea good for health?," in "Interesting Health Articles" is owned by Kiran Asif, a pharmacy student. Bitter melon, also known as bitter gourd or Karela (in India) often tastes like medicine. But does it have true medicinal properties? Does it have side effects?

Anti-Diabetic properties of Bitter melon

In a study conducted on rats, bitter mellon extracts were given to diabetic rats for 30 days. Following this treatment, blood was sampled from these rats to analyse for blood glucose, lipid profiles, and antioxidants. Results showed that the vegetable helped maintain normal glucose levels, improved lipid profiles, as well as increased antioxidant levels. Thirty days following the cessation of treatment, all three diabetic parameters in rats reversed to their abnormal levels.(1)

Bitter melon: A Dietary Supplement for Prevention of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a major killer disease. In 2010, it's documented that 39,840 females and 390 males were killed by this illness.(2) The surgeon, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong who co-developed the most popular drug Abraxane (an injectable formulation of paclitaxel wherein it is bound to albumin) is found amongst Forbes 400 list of billionaires. Paclitaxel was isolated from the bark of pacific yew tree. Monroe E. Wall and Mansukh C. Wani isolated the drug from the bark.

Similarly, in a study on the effects of bitter melon extract on human breast cancer cells, researchers at Saint Louis University found a significant decrease in cell growth and a reversal of the cancer process. They suggested it's potential use as a dietary supplement for breast cancer.(3)

Possibility of Side effects of Bitter melon

Recently in 2010, Indian researchers reported vomiting blood (haematemesis) due to gastric ulceration induced from consumption of bitter melon extract.(4) However in 2009, another group of Indian researchers found that the methanolic extract of bitter melon healed gastric ulcers and prevented the development of gastric and duodenal ulcers in rats.(5)

References:

1.Chaturvedi P, George S;Momordica charantia maintains normal glucose levels and lipid profiles and prevents oxidative stress in diabetic rats subjected to chronic sucrose load.J Med Food. 2010 Jun;13(3):520-7

2.Breast Cancer.National Cancer Institute; http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/breast.

The copyright of the health article, "Bitter melon: A Medicine at the Greengrocery," in "Interesting Health Articles" is owned by Dr.Syed K.Haque M.D. Permission to republish this article in print or online must be granted by the author in writing.

If you have time and are interested then check out Your Ad Here.

If you find this interesting , then please consider subscribing to interesting health articles and facts via my feed RSS. Despite the fact that high blood pressure causes few symptoms, it leaves its mark on the body in the form of heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke. Hypertension also runs in families which means a person who has a close relative with it is more likely to eventually have it themselves. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a way to prevent hypertension naturally? A new study shows that drinking hibiscus tea could help.

Drinking Hibiscus Tea to Prevent Hypertension: Does It Work?

In this study carried out at Tuft University, researchers gave 65 middle aged and older adults three servings of brewed hibiscus tea or a placebo drink each day for six weeks. At the end of the six week period, the group who drank the hibiscus tea had an average reduction in systolic blood pressure of 7.2 mmHg - compared to 1.3mmHg in the group who sipped a placebo. While this may not sound like a lot, it’s about what a person can expect when placed on a single blood pressure lowering medication – and it was achieved without drugs.

Why Does Drinking Hibiscus Tea Reduce Blood Pressure?

Researchers believe hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure in two ways. It helps to relax and lower the resistance in blood vessels and it reduces fluid build-up in the body by acting as a diuretic. This isn’t the only study to suggest that drinking hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure. A previous study published in the journal Phytonutrient showed that sipping on hibiscus was as effective as the blood pressure medical Captopril. Another study found it to be effective for reducing elevated blood pressures in diabetics.

Hibiscus Tea to Prevent Hypertension: The Bottom Line

Hibiscus tea holds real promise for lowering mildly elevated blood pressures without the side effects of prescription blood pressure medications. Since blood pressure reduction is modest with hibiscus tea, it may not be suitable for everyone. It might best be used to lower the blood pressure of people who are at high risk for high blood pressure, but have only mild elevations in blood pressure. Combining hibiscus tea with lifestyle changes such as a low fat, low salt diet and regular aerobic exercise could be an effective way to control mild hypertension naturally. Talk to your doctor about this.

The copyright of the article, "The Best Tea to Prevent Hypertension?," in "Interesting Health Articles" is owned by Dr.Kristie Leong M.D. Permission to republish this article in print or online must be granted by the author in writing.

If you find this to be an interesting article, then please consider subscribing to my feed RSS. The reality is that most weight loss pills are ineffective, and some can be downright dangerous. There is no real substitute for a healthy diet and exercise plan, but there are some natural supplements that may help. The good news is these supplements are not dangerous for the average person and they may have other health benefits as well. Here are three natural supplements for weight loss.

Natural supplements for weight loss: Fish oil supplements

Studies in mice and preliminary studies in humans show that the omega-3’s found in fish oils may help to boost fat metabolism. Mice that were given a high fat diet along with fish oils over a five month period metabolized fat more easily and gained less weight than mice that didn’t receive supplements. They also showed higher levels of enzymes and proteins associated with fat metabolism. Small human studies have also shown similar results. Fish oil supplements also help to boost satiety which can reduce calorie consumption. Fish oils are safe for most people – although people taking blood thinners should avoid them.

Natural supplements for weight loss: Green tea extract

Animal and small human studies show that adding green tea extract to the diet helps to subtly boost fat metabolism. Initially the metabolism boosting effects were thought to be due to the caffeine in green tea, but studies show it’s actually the catechin polyphenols that are responsible for revving up the metabolism. One study showed that taking a green tea extract consisting of 90 mg. of EGCG and 50 mg. of caffeine three times a day was effective for boosting metabolism, but drinking green tea throughout the day may offer similar benefits. Talk to your doctor before taking a green tea supplement – particularly if you have high blood pressure or heart disease.

Natural supplements for weight loss: Capsaicin

You probably know capsaicin as the ingredient in red peppers that gives it that spicy kick. It turns out that the fire may also help to ignite fat burning and help with weight control. It appears to do this by altering a muscle protein called SERCA causing it to release more energy as heat. Another study showed that a combination of the EGCG found in green tea and capsaicin are an especially effective combination for fat burning as well as for decreasing appetite. Capsaicin supplements are sold by many vitamin companies, but it may just as effective to eat more hot, spicy foods containing chili peppers.

Natural supplements for weight loss: The bottom line?

Don’t count on these supplements to give dramatic results, but combining them with a healthy eating plan and exercise may give you an additional edge. As always, talk to your doctor before taking any type of weight loss supplement.

The copyright of the article, "Three Natural Weight Loss Supplements," in "Interesting Health Articles" is owned by Dr.Kristie Leong M.D. Permission to republish this article in print or online must be granted by the author in writing.

If you find this to be an interesting article, then please consider subscribing to my feed RSS. Though supplements are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, many people still use them in place of or in conjunction with mainstream treatments. An important issue for those using the supplements is whether they work. Some evidence exists for the use of St. John’s wort in treating depression and inflammation, but there are also some reasons to approach the use of the plant with caution.

St John’s wort is also known as goatweed and by the scientific name Hypericum perforatum L. As a member of the Hypericaceae family, the plant is listed as a noxious weed in nine U.S. states and is considered a livestock-poisoning plant. Hypericum is native to parts of Northern Africa, Asia, and Europe, been naturalized to the Pacific and Americas, and its extract is sold in the form of teas, capsules, and pills for human consumption. The plants have a distinctive yellow flower, which is considered the most advantageous portion of the plant.

The active chemicals in St John’s wort include hyperforin and hypericin. Supplements are often labeled by hypericin potency, but it is directly related to hyperforin content. Hypericin is a photosensitizing agent found to prevent viral replication in animal models and to inhibit inflammatory activity. In recent years, hyperforin was found to be the active ingredient conveying anti-depressant effects. It was also shown in a recent study to reduce angiogenesis (new blood vessel creation) in and the spread of the tumor Kaposi’s Sarcoma.

The potential effect of St. Johns wort in treating depression has been studied for decades, including a 1997 Swedish study that found mood elevation and reduced side effects compared to conventional pharmaceutical depression therapies. However, the exact mechanism of how Hypericum affects chemical pathways in the brain is unknown, though there does appear to be both anecdotal and clinical evidence that it works for treating mild depression (treating major depression with St. John’s wort is not recommended). Its effects on inflammation are more questionable and larger studies have been proposed to pursue the possibility.

The potential problems with St. John’s wort, and why it is not being pursued as conventional anti-depressant therapy, include photosensitivity and interactions with other drugs, including antibiotics and birth control. The offending component is hypericin, which causes increased sensitivity to UV light, and there are concerns that blindness is associated with high dosage and long-term use of the extract. This same molecule interferes with the actions of antibiotics and birth control treatments.

A common problem with herbal supplements that also exists with St John’s wort is a lack of regulation in the herbal industry. The companies making the pills and capsules sometimes lack quality control and cases of heavy metal poisoning have occurred due to negligence during manufacturing. Also, there is no external validation that the capsules contain what the company says they contain. Any herbal supplement purchase is taking the company on good faith. Consumers should be aware of the company that produced the supplements they are looking to purchase and to stop taking the supplement immediately if adverse effects occur. The common dosage for St John’s wort extract is 900 milligrams daily (usually 300 mg three times a day) of an extract labeled as 0.3% hypericin. Some supplements may deviate from the average formulation and, like any chemical, labels should be read and followed cautiously. It has been found to contain beta-carboline harmala alkaloids which are MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase inhibitors) with anti-depressant properties.
St John's wort

It has been used for centuries to treat mental disorders and nerve pain. People have also used it as a sedative. They found it helpful in malaria treatment, and used it as an ointment for wounds, burns, and insect bites. In our times, it is popularly known as an herbal treatment for depression. German doctors commonly prescribe it for mild depression, particularly in children, adolescents, and where there is headache over cost of treatment.(stjohnswort NIH )

Valerian

Valerian is used against sleeping disorders, restlessness and anxiety, and as a muscle relaxant. The mention of acupuncture brings to mind a Chinese old man poking and twisting needles at some well-thought-of point in his clients body. It's a Chinese concept. The prick is believed to release a vital energy. They call that energy 'qi'.

Although acupuncture is reported to benefit a myriad of diseases, it's most popular action is that of pain relief. How it works? Researchers say they don’t know it's mechanism of action. When I hunted for studies carried out on acupuncture, I felt that scientists were more busy researching whether it works rather than how it works. So the question of how it works remains unsolved.

Many a question has been raised regarding if it works or not. One scientist points out that he thinks its a psychological manipulation technique, a distraction. Another says its a placebo.

In one study, as reported in 2006 ,one group of volunteers were subjected to deep-needling,1 cm deep, at well known acupuncture point from the back of the hand. The control group had the needle inserted just 1 mm deep. A brain scan was carried out during the procedure. The team, including leading scientists from University College London, Southampton University and the University of York, found the superficial needling resulted in activation of the motor areas of the cortex, a normal reaction to pain while deep-needling deactivated the limbic system, the seat of pain and emotions. It is to this study that scientists questioned themselves, could this just be a psychological effect?

Back in 1999 another interesting study was reported. It attempted to answer an important questions raised by scientists." German scientists tested the therapy by treating one group of patients with acupuncture and another with a fake procedure designed to simulate its feel.” The fake procedure consisted of a needle that drew back into its handle when pressed onto the skin. The result, the actual therapy showed greater benefit. The patient felt the placebo needle and saw it being inserted. This study made some say that it helped rule out the psychological effects of the needle.

In recent times, another type of fake therapy is being compared to the real acupuncture as practiced by the Chinese. This fake therapy consisted of superficial needling.

Another study as reported in march 2006, "After six weeks of treatment 47 per cent of the real acupuncture group said their treatment had reduced their attacks(migraine) by half. Some 40 per cent of those patients given drugs said the same, and the fake acupuncture treatment was effective in 39 per cent of cases."Superficial or deep, both seems to be effective.

And today BBC reports "After six months 47% of patients in the acupuncture group reported a significant improvement in pain symptoms(back pain), compared to 44% in the fake group, and just 27% in the group who received conventional therapy".

Superficial or deep both seems to be effective. But this time they seem to be even more effective than conventional therapy.

If you find this health article interesting then please consider subscribing to my feed RSS. However, one of the most important properties seems to be its antibiotic action.Honey has been shown to be superior to certain conventional antibiotics in treating some infections. This bactericide (bacteria-killing) property of honey is named "the inhibition effect". Experiments conducted on honey show that its bactericide properties increase twofold when diluted with water. It is very interesting to note that newly born bees in the colony are nourished with diluted honey by the bees responsible for their supervision - as if they know this feature of the honey.

Benefits of honey in Healing wounds & grazes

Honey is of value in treating burns, infected surgical wounds and ulcers. Honey is very viscous, enabling it to absorb water from surrounding inflamed tissue. For example, a study in West Africa showed that skin grafting, surgical debridement and even amputation were avoided when local application of honey to wound promoted healing, whereas conventional treatment failed. For such wounds or Grazes, cover the wound with honey and a bandage.

Benefit of honey in Diarrhoea
At a concentration of 40%, honey has a bactericidal effect on various gut bacteria known to cause diarrhoea and dysentery

Honey in Allergies

Raw honey is an excellent treatment for 90% of all allergies.

Teeth and Honey

Although Honey is sweet, it helps to maintain and protect teeth! Its anti-microbial activity has been tested on several species of dental plaque bacteria. A study shows that honey has been proven to sharply reduce acid production, thus killing the bacteria responsible for dental caries, and blocking the growth of oral bacteria.

Honey in Stomach Ache

Take 1 teaspoon of honey, juice of ½ a lemon with a hot glass of water first thing in the morning.

Honey in Colds and coughs

Honey is remedial in cases of persistent coughs and sore throat. The strong antibiotic properties honey contains coats the throat and reduces throat irritation. Mix 6 oz. liquid honey, 2 oz. glycerin with juice of 2 lemons. Bottle and cork firmly. Use as required. For Blocked noses, Place a dessert spoon of honey in a basin of hot water and inhale fumes after covering your head with a towel over the basin. For Sore throats, Let 1 teaspoon of honey melt in the back of the mouth and trickle down the throat. Eases inflamed raw tissues.Uneasiness felt in the mouth & throat due to infection can be relieved immediately with honey, so there is extensive scope for honey in cough mixtures & expectorants.

Honey used for children helps inflammatory throat conditions as it both purifies blood.

Benefit of Honey in Digestion

Because sugar molecules in honey can convert into other sugars (e.g. fructose to glucose), honey is easily digested by the most sensitive stomachs, despite its high acid content. It helps kidneys and intestines to function better. Hence honey is beneficial for maintaining a healthy digestive system as well as combating illnesses such as constipation. For poor digestion, Mix 1:1 honey with apple cider vinegar and dilute to taste with water. For patients suffering with various maladies of stomach who consume 10 grams of honey on an empty stomach in the morning & not eat anything thereafter for about 1 hour, will start feeling relief from the disorders within a few days.

Benefit of Honey in Weight control

Honey has a low calorie content. Honey, when it is compared with the same amount of sugar, it gives 40% less calories to the body. Although it gives great energy to the body, it does not add weight.

Rapidly diffuses through the blood

When accompanied by mild water, honey diffuses into the bloodstream in 7 minutes. Its free sugar molecules make the brain function better since the brain is the largest consumer of sugar.

Honey in Conjunctivitis

(pus in the eye)Honey dissolved in equal quantity of warm water. Apply, when cooled, as lotion or eye bath.

Honey and Blood

Honey provides an important part of the energy needed by the body for blood formation. In addition, it helps in cleansing the blood. It has some positive effects in regulating and facilitating blood circulation.
